BEST LINEAR UNBIASED PREDICTION (BLUP) EVALUATION
The BLUP breeding value estimation is based on all the breeding information data produced from
three recording systems: On-Farm Performance Testing, Sow Productivity Control and Central Station Testing. Traits listed below are included in the Scan BLUP
system and used for estimation of economic breeding values which are produced weekly.
AT CENTRAL STATION (3100 hd/yr)
Growth Rate, Feed Efficiency Dissected % Lean Meat Color and pH evaluated Legs, Hooves, Movements Joint Lesions, Osteochondrosis
ON FARM SOW PRODUCTIVITY CONTROL (8700 LITTERS/YR)
Farrowing Interval, Number Born Alive PRODUCTION TESTING (22,000 hd/yr) Daily Gain, Backfat Legs, Hooves, Movements,
Conformation and Underline Judged and Indexed
CONTROLLED SELECTION
Selection is accomplished by utilizing the above information weighed and calculated to produce breeding
values for Lean Growth Efficiency (LG-EBV), Sow Productivity/Fertility (S-EBV) and
Structural Soundness (C-EBV). These breeding values are then used to implement effective selection
and breeding planning. The methods used during this stage will also include a strong consideration of
important maternal traits such as longevity, life time productivity, suckling performance and
selection against genetic defects.

AmeriScan Quality
Over 20 years of Evaluation for Quality Meat
Testing for Quality Meat has long been a part of prducing pork in Sweden. The Scan Group developed
its own genetic program, not only to ensure efficiency of production, but also to ensure a quality product for their ultimate customer-the consumer.
A History of Quality
1975-Ultimate-pH testing began. Meat color testing and selection was introduced. Disection of carcass with
an improved method was utilized in testing.
1978-Halothan gene elimination began through testing and selection.
1983-Stress gene elimination efforts initiated by using three
blood markers-PGD, PHI,PO2.
1988-Intramuscular fat testing and evaluation started.
1989-Evaluation of sensoric tasting traits began.
1990-
Stress gene elimination completed
in all breeds through halothan testing and blood typing. Control of undefined animals continues.
1993-Meat quality traits incorporated into BLUP Evaluation
System.
1997-The Swedish Meat Research Institute is a research, development and consulting company-part of the Scan Group. At the Institute in Kavlinge, a staff of about 60 are active in such areas as meat quality, keeping quality, safety, product development
and quality assurance. Through this co-operation, further refinements will be made.
AmeriScan Lean
Over 70 Years of Testing for Efficient Meat Production
The implementation of an accurate carcass dissection method in 1975, based on both
total and partial dissection, has been extremely efficient, producing substantial genetic
improvements for lean percetage of 0.4-0.5% per year. The charts below indicate Nucleus Line improvement during a 10 year period, representing over 35,000
animals tested.

The Swedish Landrace and Yorkshire
Sow productivity, durability and fertility traits are well documented for the Swedish Landrace
and Yorkshire genetics. The AmeriScan maternal lines are developed from the best lines in the large Scan Genetics populations. By using the best of these
high quality maternal breeds, we can provide the U.S. market with excellent and the experience of selection and adaptation procedures. The capability
of such specialized maternal lines to shown below, both in the U.S. and abroad.
